Polyester resin, fiberglass, soil, lightbulb
36 × 48 × 12 in.

Topography is a sculptural work composed of polyester resin, fiberglass, soil, and a suspended lightbulb. Measuring 36 × 48 × 12 inches, the work was produced with support from the Graduate Student Engagement Fund Grant at Pratt Institute and later exhibited at Pratt Institute and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Jacksonville, Florida.

The work stages a stratified surface of earth and resin presented as both terrain and artifact. Suspended above the form, a single lightbulb illuminates the surface like a surveying instrument, positioning the viewer as both observer and excavator. The piece reflects Ball’s ongoing interest in geology, infrastructure, and the ways human systems frame and interpret the land.
